Does anyone know if Alanis Morissette and Jim Morissette are related?
Probably not, since his name is Jim Morrison.
No, I don’t think that’s right…
They’re identical twins, born Alanis and James Morris. They were extremely close as kids, it was very rare that they were ever seen apart. As such, their friends, neighbours and even their relatives called them The Morris Twins, almost always. Most people were not given the opportunity to even learn their first names, and those that did learn forgot rather quickly, as they were rarely ever spoken about as individuals, but always as a pair.
As they grew older and gained a bit of individuality from each other, the people around them needed a way to differentiate between the two. They were so identical, that the only unique quality of each of them was that one was a girl and one was a boy. So it only makes sense that their friends began referring to the girl Morris Twin as MorissETTE, and boy Morris became MorriSON.
Another fun fact is that The Morris Twins’ mother had another son from a previous marriage named Steven Smith. When Steven’s father died in a tragic canoeing accident, he moved in with the Morris family, and eventually had his last name changed. Because he was only the Twins’ half brother, people referred to him as Morrissey, as he wasn’t fully a Morris.
As we all know, all three Morris children went on to become wildly famous musicians. Before making it big, the twins reintroduced their first names, but also kept their nicknames in tact. Jim Morris became the legendary Jim Morrison of The Doors, and Alanis Morris set out as a solo artist known to the world as Alanis Morissette. When their half-brother Steven started a band, he didn’t use his first name and only went by Morrissey. As an ode to his late father, he named his band The Smiths.
